A new host for Philornis torquans (Diptera, Muscidae) from the Brazilian Cerrado Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Couri,Márcia Souto; Barbosa,Leandro; Marini,Miguel Ângelo; Duca,Charles; Pujol-Luz,José Roberto.
Abstract Philornis larvae and pupae were collected in nestlings of Neothraupis fasciata (Lichtenstein), the White-banded Tanager (Passeriformes, Thraupidae), in three breeding seasons, between October and November 2003-2005 in a reserve in central Brazil. Here, we present biological data, diagnosis to the recognition of the species and a key to the segregation of species occurring in the Cerrado. The larvae were intradermic in the nestlings and the pupae were collected in the nests after the birds have abandoned them. The immatures collected were taken to the laboratory and reared under laboratory conditions, until emergence. The species identified as Philornis torquans (Nielsen), is here firstly recorded from the Brazilian Cerrado, and firstly recorded...

Humoral immune response in cattle experimentally infested with larvae of Dermatobia Hominis Ciência Rural
Barbosa,Celso Guimarães; Sanavria,Argemiro; Freire,Ronald Bastos.
Six bovines were infested with 60 first instar larvae of Dermatobia hominis. The animals were bleed weekly, and their antibodies levels to D. hominis L1, L2 and L3 instars measured during the time, following the infestation course. The antisera were submitted to a titration against optimal dilutions of antigen coated wells of microplates, previously sensitized with L1, L2 and L3 preparations, respectively. The ELISA assay was used to test single dilutions of antisera, which results were comparatively analyzed with a control of not infested animals. Antibodies against L1 were detected between the first and 21st day post-infestation (DPI) and, from the 42nd DPI on. Anti-L2 antibodies, could be detected on the 21st DPI and from the 35th DPI until...

Cramer-Ribeiro,Bianca Chiganer; Sanavria,Argemiro; Monteiro,Heloísa Helena Magalhães Soares; Oliveira,Marcelo Queiroz de; Souza,Fábio Silva de.
An inquiry about cases of myiasis by C. hominivorax larvae on dogs presented to 190 veterinary establishments of Rio de Janeiro City in 2000 was performed to contribute to the comprehension of epidemiological features of this myiasis. Cases of screwworm infestation were observed in 184 veterinary establishments: in 104 among 108 establishments of the Northern Zone, and in 80 of 82 establishments of the Western Zone of the city. Most infested dogs were adult, pure breed, long and dark-haired, living in houses, while no preference for sex was observed. Ears were most infested, and the main cause of lesions that led to myiasis was otitis. Screwworm infestation is a very frequent disease on dogs, and prevention programs should be developed, specially during...

Cramer-Ribeiro,Bianca Chiganer; Sanavria,Argemiro; Monteiro,Heloísa Helena Magalhães Soares; Oliveira,Marcelo Queiroz de; Souza,Fábio Silva de.
An inquiry about cases of myiasis by Dermatobia hominis larvae on dogs presented to 190 veterinary establishments of the Northern and Western Zones of Rio de Janeiro City in 2000 was performed. Cases were presented to 37 of 108 establishments in the Northern Zone and to 55 of 82 in the Western Zone of the city. Presence of rural or forest areas and coexistence of dogs and farm animals created an adequate ambient to flies proliferation, including the vector flies of Dermatobia hominis eggs. Adult, pure breed, short and dark-haired dogs were most infested. Males were most infested in the Northern Zone, while in the Western Zone no predilection for sex was noticed. Dogs kept in small farms and house yards, as adult and large breed dogs (usually for house...

Penile myiasis as a differential diagnosis for genital ulcer: a case report BJID
Passos,Mauro R.L.; Ferreira,Dennis C.; Arze,Wilma N.C.; Silva,José Carlos S.; Passos,Felipe D.L.; Curvelo,José Alexandre R..
The genital localized myiasis is a rare zooparasitic dermatosis. This case reported to a penile myiasis by Dermatobia hominis larvae in a 62 year-old man, who is a retired military official from São Gonçalo city, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. This patient was guided to the sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic from Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) by professionals from a urology outpatient clinic of a public hospital from Rio de Janeiro state. The exam showed a 2 cm diameter nodular lesion with a hyperemic area in the glands penis that had arisen 20 days before the exam. It evolved in a favorable way after larvae removal, through previous local anesthesia and slight pressure in lesion's base with the extraction of the larvae. Penile myiasis is...

Prevalence of larvae of the bot fly Cuterebra simulans (Diptera, Oestridae) on Gracilinanus microtarsus (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) in southeastern Cerrado from Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Cruz,Leonardo Dominici; Fernandes,Fernanda Rodrigues; Linhares,Arício Xavier.
The prevalence of Cuterebra simulans bot fly parasitism on marsupial Gracilinanus microtarsus was compared between sexes and seasons of the year. No significant difference was observed between females and males but prevalence was higher in warm-wet season than cool-dry season. This pattern agree with observations of others studies with oestrids flies in southern Neotropical areas, suggesting the occurrence of latitudinal change in the peak of bot flies reproductive activity related to seasons of the year along these systems. This is the first record of C. simulans larvae parasitism on G. microtarsus and its occurrence in southern areas of the Neotropical region.

Would Chrysomya albiceps (Diptera: Calliphoridae) be a beneficial species? Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Madeira,N.G..
Chrysomya albiceps (Widemann) develops on animal carcasses and may cause secondary myiases. An adult female Merino sheep presented a lesion of roughly circular shape with a 7.5cm radius in the anterior part of the thorax. A large number of second-instar larvae was removed from the lesion in addition to first-instar larvae from the wool. A third-instar larva was also obtained from the same lesion site and in the laboratory gave origin to a Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) adult insect. The larvae retrieved from the lesion were nurtured in laboratory. Pairs consisting of 100 individuals were formed with the adult specimens obtained from the larvae and kept in two cages. In all of the 800 adults reared in the laboratory and examined (100 per generation) the...
